In the 12 year period between 1992 – 2004, the Concord De La Salle high school football team in northern California went undefeated. During that span they won 151 consecutive games. Although only a high school football team, the winning streak — led by head coach Bob Ladoucer and his staff — was one the great achievements in the history of sports. I believe it is also one of the great achievements in the history of leadership.
To put it in perspective, what are the chances the best sales professional in the world could go on 151 sales calls and win the business every single time?
During the winning streak, the De La Salle players were constantly asked by sports writers and reporters, “How do you do it?” The consistent response by players reveals a lot about De La Salle’s formula for success: “We focus on the fundamentals with a discipline our opponents don’t have. And we have coaches we deeply respect who teach us a game we really love.”
Sounds too simple, doesn’t it? Coach Bob Ladouceur and the coaching staff made the formula work to perfection at De La Salle for 12 consecutive seasons.
What could your organization accomplish with this formula? Focus on the fundamentals + extraordinary discipline + leaders that people deeply respect + great passion for the business.
